The rate of motion of the molecules in a glass of water are BEB directly proportional to the temperature of the water. When all motion Registered User stops, the water is frozen, and as long as it stays frozen, the food dye Joined: Wednesday, 2nd of June 2010, 12:09:21 will not color the water. Actually, there will be a motion introduced in the still water CHICKAWAWA as the food dye collides with the water surface. I guess the time it takes Registered User would depend on how high you drop the food dye from. If from very high, Joined: Thursday, 3rd of June 2010, 14:48:10 less time, if you are an expert food dye dropper and cause no movement, Posts: 1790 never. Viewed 17260 times

Wow, amazingly my roommate is 10 year old did this experiment TAKUUN for his science project a few weeks ago. If the still water is hot, it Registered User doesn't take too long. I think it was around 30 seconds for the mix to be Joined: Wednesday, 12th of May 2010, 11:34:08 complete. If the water is cold, then it takes significantly longer (if you Posts: 1483 mean complete diffusion, then it would probably take five minutes). We Viewed 13110 times stopped the timer when we could not see a significant amount of clear
water, & it appeared that the dye had spread through most of the water. I
think it was around 3 minutes (maybe a little more). We used a cup of
water & two drops of dye for each test. We timed hot water & cold water
spreading.
