The rate of motion of the molecules in a glass of water are

directly proportional to the temperature of the water. When all motion

stops, the water is frozen, and as long as it stays frozen, the food dye

will not color the water.

Actually, there will be a motion introduced in the still water

as the food dye collides with the water surface. I guess the time it takes

would depend on how high you drop the food dye from. If from very high,

less time, if you are an expert food dye dropper and cause no movement,

never.

Wow, amazingly my roommate is 10 year old did this experiment

for his science project a few weeks ago. If the still water is hot, it

doesn't take too long. I think it was around 30 seconds for the mix to be

complete. If the water is cold, then it takes significantly longer (if you

mean complete diffusion, then it would probably take five minutes). We

stopped the timer when we could not see a significant amount of clear
water, & it appeared that the dye had spread through most of the water. I
think it was around 3 minutes (maybe a little more). We used a cup of
water & two drops of dye for each test. We timed hot water & cold water
spreading.
